Xigia Beach

Xigia lies about 23 km northeast of Zakynthos Town, between the villages of Alykes and Agios Nikolaos. A narrow road leads down to a small parking area beside the shore, so it is easy to reach by car or taxi in roughly 30 minutes from the capital.

Many visitors prefer to arrive by boat. Xigia sits on the same stretch of northeast coastline as several other highlights, and our Shipwreck Blue Caves & Xigia Beach cruise includes a swimming stop here after Navagio and the Blue Caves, one of the most popular half-day routes in Zakynthos.

Underground springs beside the beach release sulphur into the water, giving Xigia its distinctive scent and pale, mineral-rich colour. Locals have long believed the water helps with joint pain, arthritis and skin conditions; many swimmers still come specifically for the soothing effect on muscles and circulation.

The beach itself is compact and scenic: fine golden sand, deep blue water and limestone cliffs on either side. There is a simple snack bar in season, but no large resort development, which keeps the atmosphere quiet and natural compared with busier south-coast beaches.

The sulphur smell is strongest near the cave outlet and fades further along the shore. Water depth increases quickly in places, so families with children should stay in the shallower sections.
