Shipwreck – Navagio

Shipwreck – Navagio

Navagio Beach, known worldwide as Shipwreck Beach, is the defining image of Zakynthos (Zante). A narrow cove of white pebble sand, turquoise water and 200-metre cliffs, with the rusted hull of the freight ship Panagiotis resting on the shore: it is one of the most recognised views in the Mediterranean.

  • Greece’s most famous beach: Navagio / Shipwreck Beach
  • Accessible only by boat; cliff viewpoint above the bay
  • Wreck of the Panagiotis (1980) on white sand
  • Combined with Blue Caves on most Zakynthos cruises

Location & How to Get There

Navagio sits on the northwest coast of Zakynthos, near the mountain village of Anafonitria and the monastery of the same name. There is no road down to the beach itself; the only way onto the sand is by boat. A cliff-top viewpoint above the bay offers the classic aerial-style photograph looking straight down onto the wreck and the bay.

Boat trips run daily from May to September from ports including Agios Nikolaos, Alykes and Zakynthos Town area. Most cruises spend 30–60 minutes in the bay for photos and swimming, often combining the visit with the Blue Caves on the same route. Abba Tours includes Navagio on all north-coast cruises and on the North Zante Full Day Tour.

The Story of the Shipwreck

The beach is younger than many people realise. Early travellers described a tiny shore of dark stones; repeated landslides through the 20th century created the white bay you see today. The ship itself is the Panagiotis, a freight vessel that ran aground here in October 1980 while reportedly carrying a cargo of smuggled cigarettes. Engine failure in heavy weather left the crew to climb the cliffs and reach Volimes village inland.

The wreck was never removed. Over time it became part of the landscape, half-buried in sand, photographed millions of times and synonymous with Zakynthos itself. Please note that climbing on the wreck is not permitted for safety and conservation reasons.

Viewpoint vs. Boat: Which Is Better?

The viewpoint gives the iconic wide shot of the entire bay, essential for photography and worth the drive through Anafonitria. A boat trip lets you swim in the cove, see the wreck from water level and continue to the Blue Caves in one journey. For the complete experience, many guests do both: our North Zante tour links the cliff platform with a boat landing at Navagio when sea conditions allow.

Arrive early in peak season if you want fewer crowds at the viewpoint. On the water, morning departures usually mean calmer seas and clearer light inside the Blue Caves on the return leg along the coast.
