12 Best Beaches in Zakynthos (2026 Local Guide)

Why Zakynthos Beaches Are in a Class of Their Own

Zakynthos, known locally as Zante, sits in the Ionian Sea with a geography that has gifted it an extraordinary variety of coastlines. The north-west coast is dominated by dramatic white limestone cliffs plunging into electric-blue water, while the south and east shores offer wide sandy bays perfect for families. No other Greek island of this size packs such contrast into one destination.

As locals who run boat trips around the island every season, we see visitors spending their entire holiday on a single beach when dozens of remarkable spots are within easy reach. This guide is our attempt to fix that -ranked not by popularity but by what each beach actually offers.

1. Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) -The Icon

No list of Zakynthos beaches is complete without Navagio. Enclosed by vertical white cliffs and accessible only by sea, this small cove shelters the rusting hull of the Panagiotis, a smuggler's ship that ran aground in 1980. The combination of the wreck, the chalk-white pebbles, and the impossibly turquoise water makes it arguably the most photographed beach in Greece.

The only way to reach Navagio is by boat. Our Shipwreck & Blue Caves cruise by small boat takes you there in the morning before the large excursion vessels arrive, giving you the beach almost to yourself. Swimming conditions depend on swell -on calm days the water is crystal clear to the bottom at 6 metres. Visit our Shipwreck Beach destination guide for full access details and photography tips.

2. Xigia -The Natural Sulphur Spa

Xigia is one of the island's most unusual beaches. Underground sulphur springs seep into the sea just below the surface, creating warm, slightly milky patches of water that locals swear have therapeutic properties for skin and joints. The beach itself is narrow and pebbly, set beneath crumbling golden cliffs, but the experience of floating in naturally warm mineral water in a cove is unlike anything else on the island.

Arrive before 10:00 to claim a spot -there is limited space and parking is tight. The sulphur smell fades quickly once you are in the water, and the buoyancy from the mineral content is noticeable. It sits on the north-east coast, easy to combine with a morning drive to the Blue Caves viewpoint at Cape Skinari.

3. Marathonisi (Turtle Island) -Where Loggerheads Nest

Marathonisi is a small uninhabited island just off the Keri peninsula in the south, surrounded by protected Caretta caretta nesting grounds. The beach is a broad crescent of fine golden sand with shallow, sheltered water -one of the few places in the Ionian where you have a genuine chance of spotting a sea turtle from the shore rather than from a boat.

Access is by small boat only, and regulations rightly prohibit landing in nesting season between dusk and dawn. Our Turtle Island cruise combines a stop at Marathonisi with snorkelling in the Keri sea caves. Crowds here are lighter than at Navagio, making it a favourite among guests who have already ticked off the headline beaches.

4. Gerakas -The Protected Loggerhead Nursery

Gerakas is the most important loggerhead nesting beach on the island and is managed as a protected zone by the National Marine Park of Zakynthos. Sunbeds are forbidden, and the beach closes each evening to protect active nests. What you get in return is a wide, pristine stretch of golden sand with clean water and an atmosphere that feels genuinely natural rather than resort-managed.

Turtle sightings from the water's edge are common in July and August, especially in early morning. The access road is rough but manageable in a standard hire car. Gerakas is on the southern tip of the island, making it a natural endpoint for a full-day east-coast drive that also takes in Kalamaki and Porto Zoro.

5–8. Porto Limnionas, Laganas, Banana & Cameo

Porto Limnionas is a rocky inlet on the west coast where the sea has carved channels and platforms into the limestone. There is no sand, but the deep turquoise water between the rocks is excellent for snorkelling and cliff-jumping at the lower ledges. Sunset here is spectacular -the cliffs catch the orange light while the water below stays electric blue.

Laganas is the island's longest and busiest beach, stretching several kilometres across the bay. It is lively, well-serviced and family-friendly, though it also sits inside the marine park buffer zone, so jet skis are banned. Banana Beach (officially Banana North and Banana South) is a gently curving, well-organised sandy beach popular with younger visitors. Cameo Island is a tiny pine-covered islet connected to the mainland by a wooden bridge -more scenery than swimming, but the sunsets draw large crowds.

9–12. Porto Zoro, Kalamaki, Agios Nikolaos & Porto Vromi

Porto Zoro on the south-east coast is a quieter, sandy beach with calm, clear water and good depth for swimming -one of the best options on the island for snorkelling directly from the shore. Kalamaki sits inside the marine park and is another key loggerhead nesting site; the vibe is relaxed and the water is shallow and safe for children.

Agios Nikolaos in the north-east is the main departure point for boat trips to the Blue Caves and Navagio -if you are taking our Shipwreck & Blue Caves cruise by small boat, you will board here. The beach itself is pleasant with good tavernas alongside. Porto Vromi, on the west coast, is a small harbour bay used by the local fishing fleet and as a launch point for Navagio by smaller operators. The water is exceptionally clear and largely crowd-free outside peak hours.

Planning Your Beach Days: Local Advice

Wind direction matters on Zakynthos. The Ionian's prevailing north-westerly (the Maistros) can kick up chop on the west coast from early afternoon, so plan visits to Navagio, Porto Limnionas, and Porto Vromi for the morning. The south and east coasts are sheltered and calmer throughout the day.

For the beaches accessible only by sea -Navagio and Marathonisi -a guided boat trip is not just convenient, it is the only option. Our small-boat format means lower passenger numbers, closer approach to the cliffs, and a skipper who knows exactly when the light is best.
