One of the many and special parts of Kefalonia is the village of Assos which is located on the northwest side of the island. It is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque villages of Kefalonia with the traditional houses and the Castle of Assos to enchant the visitor.
Assos is located very close to the beautiful beach of Myrtos and is about 30 km from Argostoli. What makes the village stand out is the fact that it retains its traditional Ionian architecture for the most part while having a unique natural landscape.
This picturesque image incorporates the small port of Assos that receives thousands of tourists during the summer season. Unique and unforgettable is the view of anyone who goes up to the castle to admire the landscape. The castle was built at the end of the 15th century in order to protect the inhabitants from pirate raids while there were great battles for the defense of Kefalonia and then for several decades the castle of Assos was used by the Greek state as a prison. Today only its ruins remain. Near the area there are also secret, hidden beaches ready for tourists to explore.
Built amphitheatrically around the homonymous peninsula, Assos is a place endowed with nature with lush vegetation and crystal clear turquoise waters. Colors and scents travel anyone who is there and walks through the stone cantonments.
Old mansions and buildings of great architecture complete the scene and leave the visitors with images engraved deep in their memory until their next visit there…
