Lake Melissani is the only precipice lake 160 m long and 40 m wide. Its water depth reaches 39 m. The stalactites are aged from 16,000 to 20,000 years. In the center of the lake where the covered part begins, there is an island 30 m long, on the surface of which there are two small hills 8 and 9 m high. A narrow water road between the island and the rocky walls of the lake leads to the rest lake cave.
Excavations have been made in the area of Melissani where they brought to light important findings mainly of the 3rd and 4th century BC, which certified the worship of the god Pan and the presence of female figures, the well-known Nymphs.
Inside the cave you will enjoy the magnificent spectacle that results from the stalactites, which have been there for over 20,000 years, the crystal blue-green waters and the sunlight, which together compose a result of incomparable beauty and make it a must visit attraction.
It is located 2 km northwest of Sami in Kefalonia and before you visit it you should know that it is a special geological phenomenon. The first to discover it was Giannis Petrochilos in 1951. Its natural entrance is vertical and was created by the fall of a part of the roof. However, there is an artificial entrance with stairs that allows you to visit the cave.
